Crystal Jewelry Reverse Carved Essex
The art of reverse carved and painted crystals, sometimes known as Essex crystals is awe inspiring. The artist would work with a small rock crystal, and from the back meticulously carve an image. Then that image would be meticulously painted and appear to have a 3-D appearance. The front would be covered with a glass dome and encased usually in gold, silver or Mother-of-Pearl. They were then applied to stock pins, brooches, pendants, cufflinks, earrings, bracelets and necklaces. These pieces are highly sought, and looked upon as long-term investments. You will never see two that are alike. The wearer of a reverse carved crystal shows their appreciation of art and jewelry that transcends time. There are few, if any, artisians today who practice this meticulous art form.
