Victorian Bride's Cake Basket with Fox and Horse Embellishments
From a Nashville, Tennessee collection, this sterling plandish Victorian bridal cake basket is the only one of its kind that we have ever seen. These baskets were historically given as gifts to the bride and apparently this particular bride was a fox hunter. Each corner is decorated with elements of a detailed standing fox on a dais, and each side is embellished with a horse head medallion. The inside of the basket is engraved with an intricate floral design and the handle is made to lay flush on the ends of the top of the basket. It measures 12" long, 8 3/4" wide and is 3" tall. It has two small places where the handle decoration has rested on the sides of the basket and has worn the silver plate, and has minor markings consistent with its 130+/- year age. It is simply beautiful and any fox hunter or fans of foxes would covet this piece. It is truly a one-of-a-kind.
